The forum is organized by the Municipality of Ruse under the patronage of the Ministry of Culture and will be held from March 14 to 30, offering the audience 23 concerts and 10 general cultural events, music from the Renaissance and Baroque to contemporary music and jazz, elite artists, ensembles and orchestras from 16 countries and 3 continents. This became clear at today's press conference, which was attended by the Director of the Directorate "Education and Culture" Tsvetoslav Dimitrov, the Head of the Department "Culture" Miglena Voynova, the Director of the Festival Iva Chavdarova, the Directors of the Art Gallery and the National Institute "Prof. V. Stoyanov" Eslitsa Popova and Maria Dukanova.
The festival offers encounters with artists from the world's musical elite, including performers of the calibre of Gidon Kremer with his world-famous trio, the phenomenal Spanish clarinetist Pablo Barragan, the famous trio of Alexander Sitkovetsky and many others. The audience will enjoy the artistic provocations of the American string quartet "Brooklyn Rider", visiting Bulgaria for the first time, with a challengingly selected program. It includes music by Mozart, Purcell and Brahms, as well as by the American composer Betsy Jolas and the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt.
One of the legendary European recorder players is also arriving in Ruse – the Dutchman Eric Bosgraaf, whom we will hear in the elite company of some of the best interpreters of the Renaissance repertoire from Bulgarian artists – Yavor Genov and Sabina Yordanova. The premiere concert of the Bulgarian vocal ensemble for early music “Cantanti Dai Monti Verdi” will complement the strong series of artists.
A kind of escape from the culture of Old Europe will be offered by the famous German crossover artist and excellent pianist Kai Schumacher, often called “the lone rider of the unlimited piano”, with an extremely attractive program, focused almost entirely on American music, which promises to become a real instrumental theater – especially impressive for the younger audience.
A special place in the program is also occupied by exclusive Bulgarian artists such as Alexander Hinchev, Plamena Mangova, elite chamber ensembles and artists such as the Frosh String Quartet, as well as leading Bulgarian orchestras, including the Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Konstantin Ilievski, the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Emil Tabakov, and the Sofia Soloists Chamber Ensemble conducted by Konstantin Dobroikov. The festival audience in Ruse will have the opportunity to hear for the first time live the unique violins "Stradivarius" and "Guarneri del Gesu", provided by the Ministry of Culture to two world-famous Bulgarian violinists - Svetlin Rusev and Liya Petrova. They will enchant the audience on March 22 with Beethoven's violin concerto, performed by the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Emil Tabakov, and on March 25, when the young French pianist Adam Lalum will perform the famous violin sonatas by Respighi, R. Strauss and Debussy.
Classical music lovers are also eagerly awaiting the guest appearance of the Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Konstantin Ilievski with the participation of the legendary Czech horn player Radek Baborak in a particularly attractive symphonic program for the listener, including music by Plamen Dzhurov, the famous horn concerto by Glier and the Fifth Symphony by Tchaikovsky.
The festival also places an important emphasis on Bulgarian composers with the special program of the famous German instrumental trio "Abstract", dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the composer Bozhidar Spasov. The memory of one of the most significant figures in contemporary Bulgarian music is also the chamber program of the elite Bulgarian musicians Tsvetana Ivanova, Ventsislav Blagoev, Yasen Teodosiev and harpist Anastasia Rowland, dedicated to the ensemble music of Lazar Nikolov under the title "Yellow and Orange" on March 23.
There are great expectations for both festival premieres of the Ruse State Opera. The latest work of composer Lyubomir Denev – the chamber opera “Alma”, inspired by the life of Gustav Mahler’s famous wife – Alma Mahler (dir. Gergan Tsenov, director Vera Nemirova and scenography by Yulian Tabakov), will have its world premiere, as well as the premiere of “Madame Butterfly” – staged by Plamen Beikov and conductor Veliana Valcheva.
For the first time at the festival in Ruse, the youth Big Band of the National Academy of Music will also perform. Its concert is on March 26. The rich festival program ends on March 30 with the large-scale production of Verdi's "Requiem" - a project of the Ruse Festival Orchestra under the baton of Emil Tabakov, with the participation of the Ruse Festival Choir and the elite international solo team with artists of the class of Krassimira Stoyanova, Violeta Radomirska, tenor Mauro Secchi and bass-baritone Pete Tanapat.
The accompanying program offers 6 art and 3 documentary exhibitions. Some of them will be exhibited at the foyer of Theatre Hall - the exhibitions "Music is a Woman" by Ivan Ivanov - Ioannii and "Hands" by photographer Dimitar Kazandjiev, as well as the poster exhibition of the Pancho Vladigerov House Museum. It has the theme "Pancho Vladigerov in the Musical Kaleidoscope of the 20th Century. Directions, Connections, Reflections", which arrives from its presentation in Bucharest. Two exhibitions will be on display at the Ruse Art Gallery – “The History of Line” by George Barber, Great Britain, and “ConTempo” – an exhibition and competition for contemporary visual arts. The accompanying program also offers a presentation of Julian Kuyumdzhiev’s documentary book “Letters from Paris” – a unique edition that includes previously unknown and unexplored letters by Lyubomir Pipkov from his French period, as well as a presentation of the book about the renowned Bulgarian composer Bozhidar Spasov, published in Cambridge.
